1976 MK3 New Zealand Mini with 162whp Honda D16 Vtec Conversion

If you are interested in a Classic Mini with the Honda Vtec Conversion and don’t want to wait for us to build one from the ground up this is a great deal. It has a Freshly built motor and trans with 3.7 final drive gearing for great acceleration and highway cruising. This is a rare opportunity to buy a professionally built and we’ll equip Vtec conversion. It currently has a Clean TX Title and approximately 2k miles since it was built. We build a lot of minis and would charge over $50k to replicate this build.

The car is a 1976 MK3 Mini originally built in New Zealand and imported to the states 10 years ago. The car was sent to a M.C.M. A Classic Mini builder out of Annapolis, MD and underwent a 1.5 Year build. No expense was spared and a long list of modifications were done. The car was sold and shipped to Texas. It was apparent that the fuel mapping and a few other modifications needed refinement so the car was sent to our shop, Gildred Racing in Santa Barbara CA. We specialize in Classic minis of this sort and were easily able to address the issues. We have recently upgraded the clutch and completed a servicing at our facility in Buelton.

I flew out to Texas just to see this little guy and I must say I was impressed. The freshly built motor and 5 speed trans had great acceleration and maintained a low highway cruising RPM. Due to the gearing and light weight this car should see around 50mpg on the open road. The modified D16 Acura Motor with a Dino tuned 162 HP at the wheels was surprisingly tame and I didn’t see much torque steer which is common with higher power front wheel drive swaps. You may not know that the all aluminum Acura D16 motor is actually lighter than the original all Iron A series power plant that it came with by nearly 30lbs. This aids in the handling and keeps the weight distribution balanced. Running the 10” wheels really aids in keeping the minis race proven driving characteristics. Hard launching in most high powered front engine vtec conversions we have built can be tricky for both the drivers and mechanics alike. We find that the commonly upgraded extra wide 13” wheels extend the track width wider than optimal and can adversely alter the drivability. Though many minis opt for the larger 13” wide wheels we recommend running 12” and 10” wheels to take advantage of the standard suspension engineering. The low profile 13” tires offer less absorption and result in a firmer ride.
